The DFID-funded Northern Uganda – Transforming the Economy through Climate Smart Agribusiness Market Development (NU-TEC MD) programme aims to improve smallholders’ livelihoods and climate resilience in a post-conflict, environmentally-vulnerable and economically-lagging region. NU-TEC MD intends to employ both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies. As its primary qualitative research methodology, NU-TEC MD plans to use the Reality Check Approach (RCA)—a tested approach to gaining up- to-date understandings of the lives of the poor and marginalised—to engage the beneficiary perspective and strengthen the programme’s formative and diagnostic components.Building on the tradition of beneficiary assessments and listening studies, the Reality Check Approach is a qualitative research method in which trained researchers undertake a rapid but intense immersion of a minimum of four days and nights with families involved in the programme. This informal approach utilises open conversations and participant observation—two key ethnographic techniques—to enable researchers to gain insights into the multiple realities facing families, their neighbours and the wider community. Specifically, RCA- trained researchers engage in detailed conversations and participate in daily activities with a small number of households in their own environment.By sharing in these families’ lives, they can build a more comprehensive understanding of local experiences, perspectives and attitudes, providing context to other research with limited qualitative depth. Beyond the host household, researchers also converse informally with neighbours and other community members, including village leaders, agriculture suppliers, school teachers and shop owners.Purpose of RoleThe Research Member will conduct fieldwork as part of the greater team for this RCA study in Uganda.
